Box Butte County has award-winning public school systems in two cities -- Hemingford and Alliance. School administrators are some of the state's finest, as well.

The Hemingford Public School System encompasses a large rural area and includes classes for students in preschool through the 12th grade. There is one elementary school with 359 students, 15 classrooms and a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:10.  The junior/senior high school has 214 students, 15 classrooms and a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:8.

School District 10 (Hemingford) covers 702 square miles. It is a Class 3, Type K-6, 6 district accredited by the State of Nebraska. Courses offered in the high school includes the basics, as well as computers, business, independent living, home economics, nutrition, shop, agriculture, business math, law and accounting. Adult educational programs are available in the high school in cooperation with the Western Nebraska Community College. Internet is available to the school through the Educational Service Unit 12. HPS has a resource teacher for students with special needs.

The Alliance  Public Schools include four campuses, two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.  Enrollment in the Alliance Public Schools is about 1,709 students for the 2007-2008 school year. The teacher/studen ratio for elementary is about 1:13 and same for the High School, Alliance Middle School class teacher student ratio is a bit smaller at 1:11.  All schools are accredited by the State of Nebraska and the North Central Association. APS employs about 275 individuals.

The elementary schools have the responsibility for initiating the education of all school age children from every culture and background. It is their belief students must be nurtured in their thinking powers, values, attitudes and skill needs for effective living and working in a democratic society. The curriculum in the elementary schools is designed to provide students a continuous education pattern, regardless of which school they attend. The strength of this effort rests on the comprehensive approach to reading, language arts and mathematics. Computer labs , networked into each classroom, provide both our teachers and students with "state of the art" hardware and software programs.  Standardized test results verify the achievement of our students by their favorable standing among state and national schools. Usually, beginning in first grade, students are instructed in the areas of physical education, art, music, remedial reading and the library sciences by curriculum specialists. This provides the students the opportunity to receive their educational experience through a variety of techniques and approaches.

The Alliance Middle School houses students in grades 5-8. The concept of a middle school is one of transition in education and works to promote exploratory and discovery types of programs. The students experience many and various changes about themselves. They are developing and organizing knowledge and concepts necessary for everyday functioning. To meet the growth and needs of students at AMS, curriculum programs are offered to give a variety of experiences. Basic studies being offered are English, math, social studies, science and physical education. Elective courses include art, technology, band, choir, home economics and computers. Students may also participate in a variety of extracurricular activities.

The Alliance school district is very proud of the education foundation established by our high school faculty. It is from this foundation the school provides for the educational needs of the students. These needs are based on societal needs individual needs and the need for self-development. The high school provides a broad curriculum and sufficient deputy to allow education of all students. To assist our students in career-making decision the high school has a Career Prospects Program, established by the Nebraska Career Information System and directed by the guidance department. Extracurricular activities range from athletics to music and drama. The high school administration and faculty believe they provide an excellent curriculum and supportive services for high school students. Our students are prepared to further their education or enter the job market upon completion of high school. AHS has a 96% graduation rate. About 71% of our students go on to higher education.
